Seven Seconds of Confusion

Did I Just Dream an Earthquake?

Something strange happened to me at 4:44 this morning.

I was asleep and dreaming that there was an earthquake. In my dream, I was lying in bed when everything started shaking. Then I woke up… except I don’t think my brain realized I was awake yet.

For about seven seconds, I could have sworn my room was still shaking. I thought things in my room were moving, and I was convinced an earthquake was happening right then and there.

Being a California girl, the first thing I did was grab my phone and check the USGS earthquake page. Nothing.

I waited a few minutes and checked again. Still nothing.

When I woke up later this morning, I checked one more time just in case they had posted it late. Nope. No earthquake anywhere in the Bay Area.

I guess my dream followed me into real life for a few seconds. It felt so real that even after I was fully awake, I was still convinced the earthquake had happened.

Has anyone else ever had something like this happen? It was one of the strangest feelings. Looking back now, I can laugh about it, but at 4:44 in the morning I was absolutely convinced California was rattling around me.
