One of the biggest misconceptions people have about happiness is that it means having a perfect life.
Many people believe that happiness comes after reaching a certain goal. Maybe it’s finding the perfect job, making more money, buying a house, getting married, losing weight, or finally solving all of life’s problems. We tell ourselves that once we reach that next milestone, then we will be happy.
The older I get, the more I realize happiness doesn’t work that way.
Life is never perfect. There is always something to worry about, something to fix, or some challenge waiting around the corner. If we wait for everything to be perfect before allowing ourselves to be happy, we may spend our entire lives waiting.
To me, happiness is not the absence of problems. It’s finding moments of joy despite them.
Some of my happiest moments have happened during moments of life that were far from easy. A conversation with someone I love. A rainy afternoon. A favorite song playing at just the right time. Watching a movie that brings back childhood memories. Sitting at the beach listening to the waves. Laughing until my stomach hurts.
Even this year, after experiencing loss and heartbreak, I have learned that happiness and sadness can exist together. Missing someone does not mean I can no longer smile. Carrying grief does not mean I can no longer appreciate the good things around me.
I believe true happiness is not about chasing a life without problems. It is about learning to notice the blessings, the beauty, and the small moments that make life meaningful, even when life is messy and imperfect. Its okay to not be okay. When things fall down, it’s okay to take a moment to bounce right back up.
I believe that happiness was never meant to be a destination. Maybe it is something we find in the middle of the journey.
